10. The evaluation of Windows experience
I tried Vista on different machines, through a Sempron 2800 with 1 GB in ram, then by an AMD64 3200 with 1 GB ram and finally an AMD64 X 2 4400 with 2 GB ram and sincerely this operating system needs a relatively new machine to run well. Experience on less powerful machines is quite poor, small delays that produce a feeling of general dissatisfaction.
The truth is that in the latest equipment, the experience is great. Windows Vista is clearly a necessary step, Windows XP already had a convincing solidity, but overlooking the aesthetic touches are added to Mac OSX style, with many other small very pleasant details.
Myth or reality?
Windows Vista needs a very good machine to run
Absolutely true, particularly for more advanced users who need a fast system. It is true that you can work with even 256 MB of ram, but I do not recommend it for normal use.
It may be great coincidence but most of my habits and needs were pleased in this new system, in summary this document will relate in a very close way with these effects.
Errors and details always
They are already as a legacy, and view inherited several of them. Then I would mention the classics, with a new retouching of visual freshness:
Buggy console commands
Long ago I listed them, but interested in apparently neither Microsoft correct them. There are some that were corrected, for example, the following were never corrected:
Now, they have incredibly fixed some typos:
Never so much disregard for your product star right?
The taskbar keeps going!
This is amazing, as it is so difficult to solve a small detail. Now apparently made an effort or at least tried to, I believe that the majority should have realized more than ever following "effect":
And now, your improved version (the sub menu on the network icon is behind the bar, this occurs by pressing the Windows key):
The truth is that it is now much less detectable, in fact, it is almost impossible to notice it because they apparently placed a routine that attempts to repair it in a similar way to an old solution that I suggested in the article entitled The typical solution from Microsoft: "reboot".
The unusable file
The legacy of resources
Always thank you see primitive resources on a modern system:
Even the contrast of the edge of the window with the folder is huge. As a challenge to the style of looking for Wally, is quite easy to find more examples of outdated resources:
Not can you drag to the taskbar?
Finally they took this unnecessary warning!
More, much more!
Tirelessly, all potentially have errors and problems, only perfection being sought imposes the limit. Then the most obvious problems:
Ugly additional space
What makes this bar?
Clear English says "Page 1 of 1", as it should be and not "page 1 / 1".
Many psychology of colors and beauty, but and usability?
Although somewhat highly subjective, from my point of view the link for "Download more gadgets" it is not very visible to say and even if we put the window on a background just blue we can read it.
Details with separators
Why are tabs at the end of the items?, even if we enlarge the window lower elements do not rise.
Day in lowercase?
It is true, we now have a nice calendar by clicking on the clock, but why the day is in lower case now?, is it a rule of language?, in Windows XP the day caps looked better.
The hoarder approach of Windows Journal selector
Back from suspension
To restore the computer appears "Windows of is resuming..." instead of "Windows is resuming...". Although in a few seconds edit the string in the "winlogon.exe.mui" files that exist in the "C:Windows" folder:
It is important to bear in mind that to modify a file should start with another disk or change the owner of the files and their privileges.
Do you need more programmers ANSI c?
The beautiful minimization
When a program is not minimized to the taskbar, it turns out that Aero is "beautiful":
I do not understand why it is a small space under the title of the application, apparently Aero Glass edges are spacious against the old XP Luna or the simple classic interface.
The stubborn taskbar, always on top!
Appears when you press Win Tab, Flip 3d and dims all of the Fund:
What happens when you press another key Win?, the start bar ahead of Flip 3d for a few seconds, curious.
The return of the classic pointer!
New Windows pointer is very nice, with a smaller tail that strangely resembles the pointer in some Linux distributions. Unfortunately, in certain situations we will see old Windows pointer (especially when you drag objects between applications):
This problem are probably more than anything, the same applications that assign the pointer, the strange thing is it happens even in Internet Explorer, the Notepad and other embedded applications from start to Windows.
Save on a page?
Improved dialogue save Windows Vista allows us to organize a bar of links is now more intuitive, for example you can navigate between folders by typing the directory name bar and remains the name of the file that was written.
However appear in the list of "previous locations" pages and other addresses that are not accessible by the same dialogue (generate an error), then I do not understand the reason that appear, much better would have been if they display a list of drives as always:
Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 13
Following errors, Windows Vista calendar sidebar not selects on October 14, including sample on October 13 duplicated by altering the entire calendar month:
The restored maximization
This graphic is pretty far-fetched but all Vista user know to maximize a window, the transparency is lost and it becomes opaque black.
In principle all that is good because it allows you to focus on the application maximized, but Windows does not detect really when necessary transparency, in fact the typical window to "Run":
If we are going to Task Manager and maximize it (normally not should maximize, the manager ignores the window properties):
Thus we get a nice opaque effect in the window that much contrasts with the style of Aero:
It may this seem just a mistake prompted by exceed the window settings with the administrator, you can however pass to navigate or in many other programs that modify the properties of the maximized window and in consequence would have been useful to add a detection mechanism to Aero.
The day or the day
When you configure Shutdown with the crew time (using the SHUTDOWN command) the message that appears now is quite friendly compared to previous versions, however there is a small inconsistency:
Clearly not be read "to the Tuesday" or not?.
In which registration are we?
Why you removed the open record folder icon?, now it is impossible to remember key registration we have open without selecting any of the branch.
Where is the file types editor!
The types of files and applications can now be assigned directly from the control panel, but from where we can edit (without directly accessing the registry) items in the context menu as we did with previous versions:
Luckily for all, we still have the document Full control over the context menu.
No animation in progress
I have no clear motive (probably for performance), but the only window that is not updated in real time on the taskbar previews is what appears when you copy or move files:
And where is Exposé?
Would not be bad to worry by implementing a function that delivers the same level of accessibility Exposé.
Security or difficulty?
Now all the files system and programs have a landlord named "TrustedInstaller". Other users, even the system itself does not have full access to the edition of the same, only read permissions:
All this is very restrictive and secure, but when we are (MIS) used to work as managers or continually handling system and program files tend to turn off account control (this message asking us if we want to elevate privileges for certain applications), so the new permissions structure becomes a limiting factor completely cumbersome and a simple solution. We always have to change the owner and permissions of any file you modify.
Myth or reality?
You can not return to settle to TrustedInstaller as owner
Yes you can, just type "NT ServiceTrustedInstaller".
A very good implementation for the sake of the security against traditional users, but a real nuisance to the most advanced.
Organizing the start menu
The endless cascade of menu home was completed, now because we don't have a menu of giant programs, but anyway organizing the menu directly is a nuisance.
When you drag a shortcut sometimes closes us the start menu (though always copy the file) nor we can drag items on a folder directly, we must wait a few seconds to expand and there you can drag the element inside:
And the standardization of the interface?
All programs we see that the menu options appear with a subtly rounded box:
However, strangely, the folders menu shows a blue box on the menu (below can see the menu, as in other folders) that behaves gently, almost slowing the menu selections:
The image was moving the mouse quickly from the menu bar.
New volume control
It was something very necessary and finally is quite well implemented, I think that for the first time as a basis (I've seen alternative options for Windows, but its performance enough left to be desired) on an operating system, whereas the counterpart of Linux, MacOS. Now Windows works-channel sound in a totally independent manner, that is to say that we could lower the volume of each application that is completely independent from the others:
So much wonder could it be, the volume control has several features:
Cute black border on the volume control
Completely useless, according to the "solution", to avoid this problem, move the volume slider or the mixer under the display window. Naturally when you open the volume mixer again we will see the black border.
The preview of the effects button
Probably "Preview" fits perfectly into the space designated for this button:
Of course it would be unthinkable to put something like "Test" instead of "Preview", so it would be just in the space of the button and no one wants to see aesthetic (pure sarcasm).
And if there are no more devices?
Why is there a separator menu although there are more devices sound below the current?:
It is good that error for a small program of a small group of developers, especially for the menu "Recent documents" list, but not to the same Windows and Microsoft in my opinion.
Why not show the volume mixer by double clicking?
When you click, the general volume appears as expected:
The strange thing is that if we double click get the same volume and not the full mixer. Truly a complete nuisance to the user.
Myth or reality?
Windows Vista is just Windows XP with a new theme called Aero
False. The new graphic mode used by Aero Glass is thousands of times greater than the former. We will not see these graphic faults where we could "paint" windows by moving one over another, or black in the shadows edges and transparencies on an accelerated graphic or a video.
Now all windows are always active in memory, so we can have active previews on all sides, capture video frames directly from the screen and even enjoy a "nice" dimming of the content of the programs that do not respond.
A number of subtleties gives this Windows capabilities that tend to make life more simple and easy, at least while we use the equipment:
Hidden commands in the submenu
When you click on any file, while keeping the SHIFT key it will provide us with a hidden option with which we can rapidly copy the file path:
Incredibly useful right?. The truth is that I expected years ago this feature and so far added it with excellent earnings of Lopesoftin particular its FileMenuTools. It also works with portfolios and combinations of multiple files and folders.
Now, when we do secondary click by holding the SHIFT key on only a folder, we will have access to another option:
So we can open the Windows command console quickly on the selected route.
Renaming of files
Now when you rename a file, the extension of the same is automatically ignored (if you have them enabled):
Similarly, when we are renaming and pressed the button tab, we move to the next file allowing us to quickly rename folders.
New Disk Manager
Now the hard disk manager can resize units quickly without having to reformat the same:
Although there are actually applications that do the same work (such as Acronis Disk Director or the known Partition Magic) and usually do not place as many obstacles as Windows Disk Manager, it is rather limited when it comes to resizing units.
Stability monitoring and problems
We now have numerous tools to solve problems. It is expected to maintain updated catalogues solutions and extensions. Commonly these options help rarely and especially only for Microsoft programs, which is fairly useless in the long run:
The Games folder
A very good idea was to agglomerate all games in a comfortable folder, with options and features ideal for them. You can even configure different types of home and other factors:
There is a utility that lets you customize the folder:
But it can also be done manually from the registry:
And from the following folder:
C:Users < user > AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsGameExplorer
Flip 3d and ALT tab interactive
Although it is a detail, it's very nice to be able to click on programs to bring its window to front from these modalities:
The start menu, the indexing and the search engine
Myth or reality?
Windows Vista uses the same Windows 2000 Indexing Service
Partly Yes, the difference is that now integrates incredibly with the system and although the performance in the first days of use is quite poor, the indexing of subsequent files will be made in conjunction with changes in the file system.
Always improved dialogs
Numerous discussions were improved and replaced, some changes are waited for years and others are quite subtle:
However, there are many others that leave much to be desired, being very little descriptive:
Even the message that appears when the "safely remove hardware" could have been a mere balloon message, from the notification bar:
Improvements thanks to Readyboost
Myth or reality?
ReadyBoost does not work, then the hard disk is always faster
Normally a hard disk is much faster than that one of the reports required by Readyboost, however based on Readyboost is not just the memory speed, but the possibility of having an almost exclusive data channel as temporary cache against the always busy hard disk.
The intelligent address bar
The non-localized directories
Now there is a major change. Any directory located as before. I mean that if we used before "Program files", now although we see that name, I will be internally using "Program Files", as well as any other language.
In the same way, all the directory are so there is no "Start Menu", "Favorites" or anything similar, there are only virtual names trying to deceive us.
Now already no longer will start a device or disk automatically, even if you have an "autorun". Windows will always ask what we want to do, what was always the ideal:
Import images simplified
The Recycle Bin is finally nameable
For years provided almost secret information as rename the Recycle Bin by changing things in the system registry. As a novelty, the trash is now easily nameable:
It's a small change, but it is certainly nice.
Incredible performance of hard drives
There is now a new option to further optimize disks, while risking the integrity of the data before power failure:
By default it is disabled.
Secretly Windows has millions of hidden features that take several years to be discovered and supported by thousands of utilities that use them. Here's a list of where they found up to the time of writing this document:
Ubiquitous key combinations
In previous versions of Windows, it was possible to place a shortcut to the shortcut. The problem was that those accesses should be on the desktop to run "globally", we can now assign combinations to access the start menu:
In this way, when you press that combination will be open access, from anywhere. I recommend placing a combination of keys to "Cuts", as shown in the image above.
Enlarging icons and previews
From any folder, including the desktop, we can resize the icons and view prior to turning the mouse wheel while maintain the Ctrl key.
The subtlety of Flip 3d
To see in slow motion the effects of Flip 3d (minimize and maximize windows also) you should add a DWORD key named "AnimationsShiftKey" with the value "1" in the "HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsDWM" key
To keep visible Flip 3d, have to press Ctrl Win Tab.
ALT tab with accessibility
Similar to Flip 3d, we can keep "Change program" by pressing Ctrl, Alt and Tab or in its defect, Alt Gr, and Tab.
Usually when we presionábamos Ctrl, Alt and delete in Windows XP, the Task Manager appeared, now on Windows Vista displayed a menu system. To directly call Task Manager simply press Ctrl, shift and Esc (this also works on previous Windows).
As in previous versions, the task manager can set affinities of the process per processor:
This functionality is very well implemented in Vista and is noticeable largely on high fluidity which the machine that has more than one processor, or a single processor that has more than one core.
Undo and redo actions in the browser
Before we could undo certain actions, such as rename, copy, or move files and folders from Windows Explorer, also now we can redo these actions.
Fixes the problems listed below may not be published in the form of a modified or Installer file, for thus the fourth point is would violate "LIMITATIONS ON REVERSE ENGINEERING, DECOMPILATION DISASSEMBLY." and the six point "SEPARATION OF COMPONENTS." of the license agreement operating system Windowsaccepted at the time of installation. However, my idea is to show the ways in which could be repaired, in the form of general computer knowledge.
And where is TweakUI for Windows Vista?
Excellent TweakUIWhere are you?. This tool provided by Microsoft in the form of complement for several years facilitating the lives of thousands of users who want to change 'secret' aspects of equipment without having to directly modify the Windows registry.
Now get to the conflict, where is TweakUI for Windows Vista?. At the moment we don't have any information completely official (there are independent alternatives) but the truth is that I do not believe that internally the functioning of Windows XP or 2003 gave much of Windows Vista, then why not run the same tool here:
Being stubborn, execute the program in all ways simply to reach a sad result:
That is why, although we all already know that this constraint will not last so right?.
The classic, we look for the resource in the executable, investigated the point where it is called and nullify the behavior. As easy as one, two, three:
Now our brand new system, with a brand new application:
The summary of the amendment is that we replace "27" by a "36" from the following sequence of original TweakUI:
